Introduction: Barretos Cancer Hospital Biobank (BB-HCB) was founded in 2006, due to the need to create a collection of normal and tumor human biological samples for research purposes. Biobank is an organized collection of biological material and associated information, collected and stored in accordance with technical, ethical and operational standards, not for commercial purposes, under the responsibility and institutional management. The existence of this collection allows the development of translational research, especially in oncology, ensure greater access to the molecular characteristics of patients and individuals without cancer. Aim: This study aimed to characterize the collection of BB-HCB and to demonstrate the importance of an organized workflow regarding the appropriate informed consent of participants, transportation, processing, storage and management of samples. Results: Currently BB-HCB is one of the largest BioBanks in Latin America containing a collection of stored normal human and tumor samples. Despite the numerous challenges, the collection of samples shows a constant and significant increase over the years, making BB-HCB part of both national and international projects and consortia, thus allowing HCB’s participation in translational research in oncology in Brazil and all world. Conclusion: The experience of BB-HCB regarding free and informed consent as well as the collection, processing, storage and management of human biological samples shows the importance of establishing an organized process to ensure quality, thus allowing the development of national and international research.
