Medicina Solidária Project: analysis of the project’s contributions and food security in among user of the support houses in Barretos

Introduction: The Medicina Solidária Project (MEDSOL), developed by the NGO Projeto de Assistência às Populações (PAP), involves newly enrolled students at the Barretos School of Health Sciences Dr. Paulo Prata – FACISB and aims to collect food, products, and derivatives for assisted living in the city of Barretos. Aim: To analyze the preception of employees at support house in Barretos regading the contributions of the MEDSOL project to these institutions and to investigate the food security of their residents/visitors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted with staff members and residents/frequenters of the assisted living. Staff members completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and answered questions related to the project’s contribution to the institution. Residents/frequenters completed two instruments: (1) a structured questionnaire including sociodemographic variables and perceptions of the project’s contribution, and (2) the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), used to assess food security. Results: A total of 48 staff members and 50 residents/frequenters participated in the study. Most staff members acknowledged the positive impact of MEDSOL on the sustainability of the institutions, although more than 40% were unaware of specific details of the project. Among residents/frequenters, 52% reported improvements in aspects of daily life due to the donations, particularly regarding food. The FIES revealed that 61% of residents/frequenters experienced some degree of food insecurity, with 22% classified as severe, especially among homeless individuals and those with alcohol dependence. Conclusion: The Medicina Solidária project proved to be relevant for the sustainability of the support houses and for improving the quality of life of its beneficiaries, particularly in addressing food insecurity. However, there remains a need to enhance project’s visibility, recognition, and dissemination in order to strengthen and consolidate its social impact.
