Abstract

Aim: Development of a low-cost peripheral venipuncture model offering to medical students the possibility of training and skills improvement. Methods: Styrofoam trays (15x15x1.8cm), 1 kg of BS Redelease® white adhesive PS with catalyst were used to create the model. For the blood vessels, 30 x 0.5 cm tubular latex tourniquets were used, the tourniquet wall had 0.1 cm and a luminal diameter of 0.3 cm. The tourniquet lumen was filled with artificial blood. Styrofoam trays were used as a mold to incorporate the tourniquets, as well as to control the depth of immersion, which would simulate the depth of the vein in relation to the skin. Bilateral 0.5 cm holes were drilled in the trays to pass the rubber tourniquets. Therefore, the tourniquets were covered by mixing the silicone rubber with its catalyst, obeying the proportion of 3% recommended by the manufacturer. This system was installed in a continuous flow infusion pump to simulate vascular flow. Experience report: The infusion pump system created a pressure on the tubular light of the rubber tourniquets similar to venous pressure. Thus, when puncturing with a needle, it was possible to observe the return of artificial blood. Great rubber resistance was observed after successive perforations, as well tactile perception to digital palpation and an affordable cost. Conclusion: the device fulfilled the purpose of its development, had excellent reproducibility and cost considerably lower than industrial mannequins.
