Abstract

Introduction: The CandleLight Memorial Campaign, held on the international day of the movement, May 19, 2019, had the main objectives of raising awareness, sensitizing and educating the population of Barretos in relation to AIDS and the myths and prejudices associated with the disease and HIV carriers. According to the epidemiological bulletin of the state of São Paulo, the Barretos region has one of the highest incidences of HIV, data that further encouraged the committee to carry out the campaign. Experience report: We have the presence of 22 academics from the faculty who, divided into groups, held conversations with the population that was present in the Barretos lakes region. The students approached adults and the elderly and elucidated questions that involved prejudiced ideas regarding HIV carriers. Prevention, transmission, treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis were discussed and condoms and explanatory leaflets on the topic were distributed. Conclusion: At the end of the campaign, candles were lit around a red bow, as usual on this date, and there was also a moment of reflection for academics themselves during this act.
