Abstract

The etiological agents of pulmonary fungal diseases can develop in several sources of organic matter. Because they are dimorphic fungi, they have a great metabolic versatility and little nutritional requirement, so they can develop in decaying wood, organic garbage and especially in bird feces. Many bird species are social and form nests in both rural and urban environments, especially in squares with medium and large trees. This behavior generates the accumulation of feces in the form of guanum that allow the growth of fungi like Cryptococcus neoformans and Hystoplasma capsulatum. Hystoplasma capsulatum is a systemic opportunistic fungus, closely related in HIV + patients since the species of the genus Cryptococcus are considered pathogenic and affect immunocompetent individuals. In this study, we found the presence of Cryptococcus sp in pigeon (Collumbus sp) feces from nestlings found in a hospital and public squares in the city of Catanduva. Our results show that of the five collection points analyzed in three were found to fungi of the genus Cryptococcus, the surroundings of  Hospital, publics squares were found a large amount of guanum. Five of the samples analyzed 3 were positive for Cryptococcus. In the collected samples no fungal colonies with morphology compatible with the genus Histoplasma were found. Our results indicate the need for constant maintenance of the cleanliness of these squares or the effective control of the quantity of these species of birds that inhabit these places.
