Abstract

Introduction: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, in addition to restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities. The Primary Care Units are the entryway to the Unified Health System (SUS) for patients with ASD, and it is important that health professionals have knowledge about the topic. Aim: To investigate the knowledge of health professionals (physicians and nurses) who work in Primary Care in a municipality in the interior of São Paulo, in relation to ASD. Methods: The study consisted of applying the KCAHW questionnaire (Knowledge about Childhood Autism among Health Workers) to 40 health professionals (physicians and nurses), who work in Primary Care Units in the municipality. KCAHW assesses the professional's knowledge about ASD, being divided into 4 domains and with a total of 19 questions. Results: There was a significant difference in the mean of total correct answers between physicians (mean = 14.3; standard deviation = 2.4) and nurses (mean = 12.8; standard deviation = 2.1) and no difference was found between the experience time and the total number of correct answers. Conclusion: The physicians have a better knowledge in relation to ASD when compared to the nurses, however, it is necessary to have a continuing education program about ASD for health professionals who work in Primary Care.
