Observance of gender equality in sustainable development goal 5: reflection on women’s sexual and reproductive rights based on the Luz report.

Abstract

Introduction: The article proposes a critical analysis of the fifth Sustainable Development Goal promoted by the United Nations in 2015, which establishes the global need to achieve gender equality and proceed with the empowerment of all women and girls. The 2030 Agenda Goals represent a global effort to eradicate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, develop all communities economically and build a truly sustainable society. Aims: The research focused specifically on the fifth Goal and its target listed in item 5.6, which highlights compliance with sexual and reproductive rights, as well as their implementation in Brazil. Material and Methods: To support the documentary research, the analysis took place on the material produced by the Civil Society Working Group for the 2030 Agenda (GT Agenda 2030/GTSC A2030), the Luz Report, produced between 2017 and 2023. Results: However, the results are unsatisfactory in terms of achieving Goal number five and, above all, in terms of public policies to ensure women’s sexual and reproductive rights. We also analyzed the latest edition of the document, which was recently released in September of this year. Discussion: The Luz Report examines the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the country and points out the commitment made by the Brazilian State to the United Nations to achieve the global goals by 2030, as well as the impacts on Brazilian society. Final considerations: Given the stark reality of gender inequality in Brazil, the implementation of the fifth Sustainable Development Goal represents a huge challenge for the Brazilian state, through the development of public policies to tackle the violation of women’s and girls’ human rights, particularly in relation to the right to sex education and access to justice.
